CHAPTER 12

Katie opened the box she’d brought to the children’s writing group. Although it wasn’t an official meeting, everyone was here, talking about what they’d done on Christmas Day and their favorite gifts from Santa.

Katie smiled as Adele showed Nora her new doll’s curly blond hair and big blue eyes.

“She looks like you,” Nora said with a grin. “What’s her name?”

“Dolly. Mom said I could take her to school.”

“You should make sure your teacher looks after her when you’re not there. Otherwise, she might get lost.”

Adele frowned and hugged Dolly close to her chest.

After those words of warning, Katie thought she’d better change the subject. She cleared her throat to get everyone’s attention. “Before you go home, I have something special for everyone.”

Each child’s eyes focused on the plate of cookies sitting in the middle of the table.

“No. It isn’t the cookies. I have something special in this box.”

“Is it a kitten or a puppy?” Charlie asked.

Katie shook her head and Charlie sighed. He’d wanted a pet for as long as he’d been coming to the writing group. When he found out Diana’s dog shared his name, he was even more determined to talk his mom into adopting a pet.

“Do you remember when we talked about your books and how we could share them with everyone?”

Andy looked at the box. “Did you photocopy our stories?”

“This is better than a photocopy.” Katie took one of Andy’s books out of the box. The glossy paperback cover was exactly as he had drawn it. “This is your book.” As soon as the children saw the paperback, they crowded around the table.

As he turned the pages, Andy’s eyes widened. “It even has the drawings I made. They look great.”

She was glad he liked it. “Have a look in the back of the book.”

He flicked to the last page. A few weeks ago, Katie took photos of each child to add to their author biography in the back of their handmade books. What they didn’t know was that the same photos would be part of the paperback versions of their stories.

“It’s like a real book.”

Katie smiled. “It is real.” Reaching into the box, she pulled out a copy of each child’s book and handed it to them.

When Nora saw the picture she’d drawn of Marley, the dog who could jump as high as a horse, she ran across to Charlie and showed him the cover. “Look, Charlie. It’s my book.”

With a grin, he showed her his book.

There was so much excited chatter that Katie knew she’d done something none of the children would forget.

“Can we take them home?” Nora asked.

“Of course, you can. I asked the printer to make five copies of each book so you have copies you can give to your family and friends.”

Andy looked in the box. “Where are your books?”

“They’ll be printed in a few days. As soon as I have them, I’ll bring them to one of our meetings.”

Adele wrapped her arms around Katie’s legs. “Thank you. Mom and Dad will love my book.
